Discussion Questions

  1. Who Before Do: What do you know God says about who you are? Please write down Scripture you know that backs that up. What do you want people to say about who you are? Who do you want to become? Look at Romans 6&7- how do these passages impact your thoughts on who you want to become? What are some of your “Who Goals”?

  2. Systems Create Success: Think through characters in the Bible and identify both positive habits and systems that led to success as well as negative habits and systems that led to failure. Think of a good habit you added in at some point in your life- what was your motivation? What was easy/difficult and why? Think of a bad habit you have wanted to change but have not yet- what makes it difficult to overcome?

  3. Stopping and Starting: Based on each of the qualities listed in discussion question 1 and who God has called you to be, can you list several actions that help you become that person? Based on each of the qualities listed in discussion question 1 and who God has called you to be, can you list several habits in your life that- if eliminated- would help you become that person? Has more than one person helped identify a problem area for you? What triggers mentioned are common for you? Being as specific as possible is the most helpful in helping you develop a new system that will lead to success.

  4. Read again the passages mentioned in the final video: 1 Corinthians 10:12-13, Galatians 6:7-10, Romans 12:1-2, Philippians 1:6. How do these passages shape the way you see this journey of personal development. What are you excited about for the upcoming sessions? Nervous about? Hopeful for?

REPLAY

If I’m going to lead others, I must first lead myself. As a Christian, part of leading myself is letting God lead me. This is the only way we can say like Paul, “Follow my example as I follow the example of Christ” (1 Corinthians 11:1). We must first consider who we are and who we want to be because our identity will always shape our actions. So, who do you want to be? Establish “who” goals before considering “do” goals.

The systems we live in are what actually contribute to our success or failure more than the goals we set. Those systems are fleshed out in the habits (both good and bad) that we form. Consider starting habits that contribute to becoming who God has called you to be and stopping other habits that fight you becoming that person. Triggers lead to actions- both positive and negative. Five major triggers for actions are: place, time, mood, moment and people.

To lead myself so I can lead other requires pursuing integrity or wholeness rather than hypocrisy or pretending. I must create healthy and whole systems for myself to have great habits. To start good habits, I must make the trigger and action obvious and easy. To break bad habits, I must remove the trigger and interrupt the action. Worship God for the ways He has helped save me from yourself. Be challenged by allowing Him to conform me to the image of Jesus. Now my small faithful decisions will not just change me actions, but redefine my identity.
